Welcome to Kilkenny Flying & Gliding Club

This blog is being introduced to allow bloggers to put up events, describe a flight you have had or give your views on how you would like GA to progress in Ireland. It would be nice for pilots to share their experiences so that others can learn from them. The blog will be moderated to confine blog material to aviation related topics.

  1. Woohoo,

The sun is in the sky and we're away. Last Sunday the much discussed trip to Belfast Aldergrove, Harbour, Weston and Kilrush was thrown away by Mother Nature and the adventurers had to seek new horizons. Following our gourmet BBQ on the Saturday evening accommpanied by lashings of Diet Coke, Sunday mornings exploits were discussed in detail. Set squares, rulers, fingers were all called upon. Sunday morning arose to crystal clear air dotted with Culumlin, lucmbus, phuck it, big clouds. DEFDL was first off having warmed their engine, followed by the ever immaculate Bravo India. Bravo India under the command of M'O'N, climbed into the silky still air and climbed at it's usual stratospheric speed. Turning onto our heading, the Slieve Blooms were clearly visable and the trip was on. Some 37 minutes after departure we turned a long finals onto runway 28 with a very variable 5 knots, across, straight down and to the right of the approach. However, with Fred Astair Oneill on the pedals we had nothing to fear. As we taxied in, our Man in Abbeyshrule was out with open hands to welcome our tenners to Abbeyshrule.
Looking into the skies as keen as the boys looking over the white cliffs to see where our brothers in flight were. Scanning, scanning, not a sign. Then the phone flashes..........Saint Anthony of Clonmel - DRO is grounded whilst waiting on a thunderstorm to clear. An hour later, the lads are airbourne and again some 35 mins later are overhead. With an overhead join and circuit DRO kissed the asphalt with the poise and grace of a feather. After a quick scan of the maps, Trim was chosen for the next leg of our journey. A brief hop by all accounts. Lines were drawn on map and again DEFDL was first into the air followed again by Bravo India and shortly afterwards DRO. Having made a PPR phonecall beforehand we knew Trim had the tae on. Approaching Trim from the West, it was easy enough to spot just off to the North East of the town. Standard overhead join and a tight approach helped was accompanied by a short field landing into this well maintained field. After shutting down, we were greeted by big smiles and a solid welcome from the native Trimtonians. The pot was warm and the biccies fresh, sure what more do ye want. Sitting outside watching Ryanair's and the like pondering were they planning on landing in Trim too or were they just having a look? Logging onto our phones Thunderstorms were noted on the Met Eireann site in a line stretching across our home path and so Kilrush was chalked in as a possible divert along with Birr. However, given the gin clear skies the thundershowers could be picked off and driven round without much difficulty. Again less than an hour after departure DL was first home by less than a circuit followed by DRO and BBI. An impromptue BBQ and a mug of tae followed and the next adventure spawned in our heads.
A great day was had, safe, fun and the forming of new friendships.
